iWeb Quick Tips & Tricks

What iWeb
Can & Can't Do.

iWeb is a great app for making simple to sometimes even intermediate websites but as always there's limitations...

Watch Out If You
Edit Your HTML Files!

You will lose .mac features such as comments and statistics. There are workarounds to this problem that can be found on iWebFAQ.com so don't stress out over it too much.
iWeb Site Of The Month:

Here is where a featured iWeb site will be listed every month. Sites are chosen as featured because of their individuality and creativity as well as for their attempts in making their sites look like they're not created with iWeb. Sites are chosen from the list of iWeb-created sites listed on iWebFAQ.com/iwebsites so make sure your site is listed if you want to be considered a feature on iWebFAQ.com. The site of the month for January 2009 is StopSuctionEntrapment.com

AllAboutRSS

iTunes is looking for the RSS feed at the URL where it was located when you sumitted your Podcast.

The URL that iWeb sends your Podcast when you Publish to .mac is rss.me.com/MobileMe-UserName/iWeb/SiteName/PageName/rss.xml (case sensitive)

That means if you Published to .mac and then submitted a Podcast to iTunes then iTunes is looking for an rss.xml file in your iDisk/Web/RSS/iWeb/SiteName/PageName/ folder.

If you re-write an rss.xml with the Link Provided and place it in the folder mentioned in your iDisk your podcast will most likely be updated.

Editing your RSS file will definitely change your podcast in iTunes. That's what RSS does! It searches for changes in the file and displays those changes accordingly.

Your index.html file has nothing to do with your podcast on iTunes. iTunes is looking for an rss.xml file in the location entered when the podcast was submitted. You can have the location of the movie files on a different server than the rss file. The URL for your movies can be anywhere on the web and can be changed by editing your rss.xml file and Ping the file to force iTunes to update your edited rss.xml file to show the changes.

You can Ping iTunes by entering this address into your browser:

https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa
/wa/pingPodcast?feedURL=http://FEEDURL

where FEEDURL is the url for your rss.xml feed. That forces iTunes to read the RSS file for your podcast and display those changes in the iTunes Music Store.

Look at http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html for more information on editing your Podcast rss feed for iTunes including how to re-direct your rss feed if you don't want your rss.xml file on .mac and you also don't want to lose subscribers to your already-established .mac podcast by having to re-submit your podcast over again from a different host.

The final option is to re-submit your newly located rss file as a podcast to the iTunes Music Store. If you do this though you should visit your old Podcast and request to have it removed from the ITMS.

Add this tag into the <HEAD> section of your HTML file to have the RSS subscribe button appear in the address bar of select browsers.

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://iWebFAQ.com/rss.xml" />

You can track viewers and subscriptions to your podcast by having your RSS feed processed through http://Feedburner.com.  This simple process involves entering your podcast URL at Feedburner and receiving the new podcast URL from Feedburner that will need to be redirected from your old podcast URL using the redirect method of editing your rss.xml file.  Ok maybe it's not such a simple process afterall but if you want to track viewers of your podcast then that's what you have to do!
