iWeb Quick Tips & Tricks

What iWeb
Can & Can't Do.

iWeb is a great app for making simple to sometimes even intermediate websites but as always there's limitations...

Watch Out If You
Edit Your HTML Files!

You will lose .mac features such as comments and statistics. There are workarounds to this problem that can be found on iWebFAQ.com so don't stress out over it too much.
iWeb Site Of The Month:

Here is where a featured iWeb site will be listed every month. Sites are chosen as featured because of their individuality and creativity as well as for their attempts in making their sites look like they're not created with iWeb. Sites are chosen from the list of iWeb-created sites listed on iWebFAQ.com/iwebsites so make sure your site is listed if you want to be considered a feature on iWebFAQ.com. The site of the month for January 2009 is StopSuctionEntrapment.com

Favicon

Go here to create a .ico image.  Start out by clicking File/New then selecting New 2 image Favicon (recommended)

Play around with the tools to create a 16x16 favicon image that will be seen in the address bar and bookmarks area of supported browsers.

When you are finished creating your Favicon image select File/Save from the program and a save dialog box appears where you can xhoose to save the image to on your computer. Leave the name of the file favicon.ico and save it to your computer.  After you've done that you need to move the favicon.ico image to the root of your site's host. If you have .mac it needs to go in your iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSiteName folder.  If your site is hosted on a different server the favicon.ico image needs to be in the http://YourSiteName.com/ root folder.

You can insert a shortcut link into the <HEAD> section of your HTML files to make your pages find the favicon.ico image if it's having trouble doing so naturally.  Although you shouldn't have a problem if the favicon.ico is placed in the proper root directory. The Shortcut code that should be inside your <HEAD> tag is:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="favicon.ico">

The icoformat Photoshop Plug-in allows you to export an image from Photoshop as an .ico format.  Just drag the Plug-In into your Adobe Photoshop CS/Plug-Ins/File Formats Folder and export your graphic as a .ico file from Photoshop or Illustrator.
