iWeb Quick Tips & Tricks

What iWeb
Can & Can't Do.

iWeb is a great app for making simple to sometimes even intermediate websites but as always there's limitations...

Watch Out If You
Edit Your HTML Files!

You will lose .mac features such as comments and statistics. There are workarounds to this problem that can be found on iWebFAQ.com so don't stress out over it too much.
iWeb Site Of The Month:

Here is where a featured iWeb site will be listed every month. Sites are chosen as featured because of their individuality and creativity as well as for their attempts in making their sites look like they're not created with iWeb. Sites are chosen from the list of iWeb-created sites listed on iWebFAQ.com/iwebsites so make sure your site is listed if you want to be considered a feature on iWebFAQ.com. The site of the month for January 2009 is StopSuctionEntrapment.com

GetOnGoogle

Start out by going to the Google webmasters Tools page here https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview

Add a site that you want to be on Google by inserting the URL into the field at the top of the Google webmasters tools page.

You will then be directed to the URL verification page where steps have to be taken in order to verify your URL.  You can either add a meta tag into the index.html file for your site or you can create an html file with a specific name for google to find.  Meta is easy to do if you have problems with Google getting 200 codes intead of 404 on non-existant pages from your server.  With meta you simply copy the code Google provides you into the <Head> section of the index.html file for your site.  Check out our EditHTML Tutorial for more information about editing your HTML file.

Next you will need to add a Sitemap to Google for indexing.  Highlight everything in the grey box and copy it to Text Edit and save this document as UTF-8 format or plain text. Name the document sitemap.xml

Put the sitemap.xml file in the root of your domain name host.  For .mac you would put the sitemap.xml file in iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb folder making the URL for your sitemap.xml file http://web.mac.com/YourUserName/sitemap.xml

After that Google will take some time to index the links provided in your sitemap and within a week or so your site will be available on Google.  You can update and re-submit your sitemap whenever new pages are available on your site.
